Cape Breton Cancer Centre Launches Walk with a Doc Program

The Cape Breton Cancer Centre is encouraging residents of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality to take a step toward better health with Walk with a Doc, a health program that brings doctors and patients together to walk.

“Walk with a Doc is honored to team up with the Cape Breton cancer centre,” says Dr. David Sabgir, the program’s founder. “By incorporating this program into the practice, it is demonstrating an exceptional level of care and commitment to their community.”

The first session takes place this Saturday, Oct. 27. The walk begins at the Greenlink Rotary Park Trail System, Maillard Street entrance at 9 a.m. with a short presentation from a physician. Participants will enjoy a refreshing walk with a physician and other health care professionals, who will provide support and answer questions during the walk. If it rains, the walk will move to the Membertou Sports and Wellness Centre. After the first session, subsequent walks will take place on the fourth Saturday of each month.

“The cancer centre is very pleased to bring this exciting and simple program to Cape Breton as it has shown such improved health results for countless people around the country,” says Valerie Nugent, director, cancer services, Eastern Zone, Nova Scotia Health Authority.

Thanks to a successful comfort and care grant, through the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation, this program will help cancer patients and their families.

“We’re proud to support programs that lead to better health outcomes,” says Mark Inglis, communications officer with the foundation. “Thanks to the generosity of Cape Bretoners, program like these can happen.”

The walk is open to patients and family members of the cancer centre. Participation is free and pre-registration is not required.
