Celebrating her birthday in style: Jean Burke said getting her COVID-19 vaccine was "a piece of cake"
Jean Burke celebrated her 87th birthday in style on March 18 – with a tiara, sunglasses and her first dose of COVID-19 vaccine, received at the Halifax Community Vaccine Clinic at the Multipurpose Centre on Young St.
She was overwhelmed by the kindness of clinic staff, who sang her happy birthday as they walked around her and clapped.
“It made her feel special, like a queen,” said her daughter, Susan Horton (who noted that since Jean is a first generation Canadian whose father was British, the comparison is apt).
While Jean was nervous about getting the vaccine at first, she said it was a piece of cake (birthday cake, perhaps?)
She was keen to have the special moment captured on camera.
“She likes the idea that this might help others feel less scared,” said Susan. Jean’s excited to share her vaccine/birthday photos with her cousin and her siblings, who are all over 80 or turning 80 this year.
“I think her COVID injection is the best gift she could have,” said Susan. “It could be the gift of life.”
Jean’s spreading out the fun and enjoying part two of her birthday celebrations tonight – she’s looking forward to eating her favourite Chinese food and ice cream cake with her daughter, son-in-law and her grandson, who is her pride and joy.
Happy birthday Jean, and best wishes for a healthy year ahead!
