Each year, Nova Scotia Health Authority’s Central Zone Players deliver an entertaining, zany, upbeat, music-filled holiday show. More than that, the community theatre troupe made up of health professionals delivers a sense of community to those who take part.

Sandy Lee Cranston, Satellite Hemodialysis Support Nurse, says being the “new kid on the block” to the Players was a little nerve-wracking on the first night of rehearsal. However, any anxiety quickly dissipated with the “support, encouragement and kindness expressed to me. I have made friends for a lifetime that I would have never met otherwise!”

It’s this sense of community and friendship that keeps many Players coming back year after year, either on stage or behind the scenes. Patrick Daigle, Clinical Therapist with Mental Health and Addictions, says, “Each year I look forward to seeing old and new friends as we work to create something special. It’s created out of the workplace but it’s a time to have fun and explore our creative sides.”

Sarah Pettipas, Workplace Health Promotion Co-ordinator with Occupational Health, Safety & Wellness, has been involved with the Players for several years, both on stage and on the production team. This year, Sarah is Executive Producer. “The Central Zone Players’ shows have brought me so many connections in this organization that I’d never have made in the course of my day to day work. It’s the friendships and the laughs that keep me coming back.”

This year’s production, It’s a Central Noxious Family Christmas – written and directed by Dan Steeves, Health Promotion Team Lead for Mental Health and Addictions – brings back notorious punk rocker Neville Noxious from a previous production; only this time his family comes to town. Don’t worry if you haven’t seen previous shows or met Neville – you’ll still feel right at home.

And while you’re watching the antics of the Noxious Family, you’ll experience another family too. Join the Central Zone Players as they come home to the stage from Dec. 13 to 16 at Alderney Landing Theatre. Tickets still available at www.ticketpro.ca or in person at the Alderney Landing box office.
