NSHA receives questions from patients, families, visitors and staff every day. Some of these questions are unique to individuals, but many of them are common questions that a lot of people ask.
Below are some of the most common questions, along with the normal answers provided.

"What if I am given a medication that doesn’t look familiar or is different from before?"
If you are given a medication that looks different from what you are used to, please let a member of your health care team know. Please don’t be afraid to ask questions to ensure you are getting the correct medication and the correct dose.
“My surgery was postponed. Why?”
It can be stressful and frustrating to have your scheduled surgery postponed. When we postpone a surgery, it is almost always because another patient has experienced a trauma and must have surgery immediately. Unfortunately, this results in someone else’s surgery being delayed. When this happens, we will do our best to provide you with information about when you can expect your surgery to be rescheduled.
“I was just admitted to hospital, and staff are already talking about sending me home. Why?”
Our goal is always to provide you with the care you need and then have you go home where you can recover in familiar surroundings. From the time you arrive, we begin thinking and talking about the supports you will need when you return home. As your condition changes, these supports may also change. It can take time to put arrangements in place to ensure you can return home safely with support. That’s why it’s important that we begin to consider your return home early in your stay with us.
“How do I request a semi-private or private room – and what’s covered by MSI?”
Most hospitals have three types of rooms available to patients:
- Standard Ward Room (four beds)
- Semi-Private Room (two beds)
- Private Room (one bed)
The standard ward room is covered by Nova Scotia’s health insurance program (MSI). The cost of semi-private and private rooms is not covered by MSI. These costs must be paid by private insurance (if you have it) or directly by you.
It’s important that you check with your insurance provider before requesting a semi-private or private room. All amounts not covered by the private plan will be billed to you, the patient.
