  • Family Physician (Primary Care Obstetrics): Amherst

    Physician Category: Family Physician
    Employment Term: Full-time, Locum

Calling Nova Scotia home means ocean views, active living and welcoming communities. Practicing here means working with passionate colleagues, providing world class care, and helping people be healthy and stay healthy, for generations. The Nova Scotia Health Authority provides health services to Nova Scotians and some specialized services to Atlantic Canadians. We operate hospitals, health centres and collaborative community-based programs across the province.
The Northern Zone is supported by three regional facilities, as well as a number of community hospitals and health centres. Specialty services are distributed among the three regional hospitals located in Truro, New Glasgow and Amherst.

The Northern Zone is located in the hub of Nova Scotia where all roads meet in the middle of the province. This is the part of the province where people come to play on the shores of the Northumberland Strait that offer the best beachcombing and warmest swimming in the Province. This area is also home to a large fresh seafood industry and rolling wine country, and the quaint town of Tatamagouche. Truro is home to industry and a modern town located on the famous Bay of Fundy and a short drive to the Five Islands Provincial Park with beautiful shores of red clay and fossil finds. The zone is also home to Ski Wentworth, one of the ski resorts in the province and Fox Harb’r the legendary golf course enjoyed by celebrities from all over. Quick access to New Brunswick and PEI make this location a small town charm with regional access to the larger centres of Halifax and Moncton in less than 2 hours.

The primary care obstetrics physicians in Amherst are seeking another family physician to join their service. The primary care obstetrics physicians cover their own inpatients during the week, with general sign-out to each other on the weekends.  The primary care physicians run a community prenatal clinic one day a week, staffed with an obstetrical nurse - currently on Wednesday.  The physicians also have back-up from an RT (off-site) and an ER physician (on-site).  The NRP courses are offered on-site and many nurses are trained with ALSO and lactation courses. Deliveries are estimated at 180 - 260 deliveries a year, with our numbers increasing with a stable epidural service and specialist coverage from 2 talented obstetricians. The physicians would plan to be available for at least the first few deliveries, to orientate and support a new physician.

The primary care obstetrics group is quite flexible, and a group who very much values perinatal care as an aspect of family medicine.  They are supportive of each other and attempt to adjust schedules to provide consistent coverage while giving each reasonable time off.

    Locum opportunities are also available.
