How do I access the clinic?

To access the clinic you will need to book an appointment at least six weeks prior to your travel.

What should I expect at my appointment?

At your appointment you will have a consultation from a public health nurse. This will include providing you with travel health education and completing a risk assessment that will provide recommendations for travel vaccines. You may also receive your routine vaccines if they are out of date.

The clinic fee and the length of your visit depend on the area to which you are travelling. You can anticipate your visit with us will be from one to two hours in length.

It is important to bring any vaccine records that you may have or request them from your doctor in advance.

Travel health education includes:

  • Food and water precautions- travelers’ diarrhea
  • Mosquito precautions- prevention and risk of Dengue, Malaria, Japanese Encephalitis, tick borne disease
  • Sexual health and blood borne pathogens
  • Other environmental hazards
  • Altitude illness and jet lag
  • Travelling with pre-existing medical conditions
  • Personal safety
  • Sun precautions

Will it cost me anything to use the travel clinic?

Travel clinics are not publicly funded in Nova Scotia. The International Travel clinic is a service provided by Public Health, Nova Scotia Health Authority (NSHA) and operates the clinic on a cost recovery basis. Prices are reviewed periodically to reflect changes in vaccine and administration costs. See the full price list for the International Travel clinic.
