Central Zone community health boards announce wellness fund recipients

Halifax, N.S. – The seven Central Zone community health boards (CHBs) are pleased to announce nearly $218,000 is being provided for projects that support local population health priorities.

Grants from the CHB wellness fund are awarded annually to non-profit organizations across the province working to improve the health of their communities, based on priorities identified by the CHBs.

“The wellness funds are a great way to support a project, bringing people, talents, and energies together for the long term benefit of the community,” said West Hants/Uniacke CHB co-chair Debbie Lebel.

CHBs in Central Zone include Halifax, Chebucto West, West Hants/Uniacke, Cobequid, Dartmouth, Southeastern, and Eastern Shore Musquodoboit.

“With the shift from a more hospital-based model of care to health promotion/population health, these funds are more vital than ever." said Coleen Nolan, Chebucto West Community Health Board co-chair. "It also gives us a chance as health boards to connect more deeply with our communities and gain a better understanding of the health and wellness needs in our own backyards.”

The Central Zone CHBs have a shared community health plan based on an extensive public engagement process.

The top four priorities identified from the communities are: equitable access to health information and services, working together upstream, wellness and health promotion, and supportive community.

CHB members look for projects that support one or more of these priorities among their wellness fund applications.

Examples of the projects receiving funding this year include:

• health promotion program for newcomer women and kids by Alnaas Community and Youth Development Association
• healthy habits wellness program for adult learners by the Hants Learning Network Association
• adult independent living skills workshop series by Cole Harbour District High School
