Amputee - Musculoskeletal (MSK) Program
Rehabilitative Services
The MSK program is a group of health care professionals that work together to provide care and support for patients and families who have experienced an amputation, trauma, burns or who are living with musculoskeletal conditions. Our team works with patients to achieve the best possible recovery and the highest level of independence and function.
Our health care team may be involved in helping patients with:
  • Wound healing and nutrition counseling
  • Leisure activities and community reintegration
  • Fitting and learning how to use a wheelchair or other mobility aid
  • Learning how to do day-to-day activities and finding out what aids may help them
  • Deciding what modifications, if any, need to be done to the home to make it accessible 
  • Assisting the patient gain the highest level of independence and ability in the home and community
For amputee patients:
  • Learning exercises and how to take care of their limb
  • Reducing post-amputation complications
  • Coping with and adapt to their amputation
  • Fitting and learning how to use a prosthetic limb, if appropriate
  • Lowering the risk of another amputation
  • Reducing post-amputation complications
  • Obtaining the best possible recovery of function after an amputation
  • Helping with any arrangements for return to the community
  • Providing emotional support through interaction with the team and peers
The team offers services such as:

  • Recreation therapy
  • Social work 
  • Spiritual and religious care 
  • Vocational Counseling 
  • Dietary
  • Nursing
  • Prosthetics and Orthotics
  • Pedorthist
  • Rehabilitation Medicine (Physiatrist)
  • Dietitian 
During an inpatient admission, family members and caregivers are encouraged to participate in their loved one's rehabilitation. Patient education and therapy sessions are open to families and caregivers and provide opportunities to learn more about a patient's condition and progress.

How do I access this program?

A physician referral is required to access this program. Admission criteria must be met to become involved with our program.
Patients may be seen through the Amputee-Musculoskeletal Clinic, as an inpatient or an outpatient basis.
