Pedorthics (foot orthotics and shoes)
Rehabilitative Services
We provide inpatient and outpatient pedorthic services for people of all ages with a variety of foot conditions.
Canadian Certified Pedorthists – C. Ped (C) are educated and trained in how to assess, modify, design and fit custom-made orthotics (sometimes called arch supports or custom insoles), footwear modifications and footwear. Your Pedorthist will perform a detailed clinical assessment, and will work with you and your health care team to devise a treatment plan. Pedorthotics is part of the Assistive Technology department.

How to access our service

To obtain new shoes or foot orthotics, a written referral  is required from a health professional, general practitioner or specialist doctor. The original or a copy of the referral can be forwarded directly to our department.
If an existing device is in need of repair, clients can self-refer (no need for a written referral from a doctor). Please contact the department’s reception directly to arrange an appointment.

What can I expect at my appointment?

You will need multiple appointments for assessment, casting/measuring, fitting, and follow-up. During assessment, the Pedorthist will ask you questions about your health, your lifestyle, and your goals, and will examine your feet carefully. A cast will usually be taken.
You will receive education about the proper use and care of your shoes or foot orthoses, how to take care of your feet, and other information to help you benefit most from your pedorthic care. You may be asked to allow a student to work with your health care provider during the appointment.

What should I bring to my appointment?

Please wear clothing that will allow easy access to your feet and ankles. Also, bring the shoes you normally wear.

The costs of obtaining a footwear device may be covered by:
