A copper intrauterine device (IUD) is a small device made of flexible plastic with copper that is placed inside the uterus by a family doctor or nurse practitioner to prevent pregnancy. This pamphlet explains how it works, the pros and cons, what will happen when the IUD is inserted, movement or loss of the IUD, and removal.
