Patients must book appointments by calling the clinic. No walk-in patients are accepted.

Call 902-527-5239 on Monday mornings to book an appointment. The phone will be answered at 8:30 a.m. until the appointments are full.

You will be given the next available appointment in the After Hours Clinic for the week.  Once the clinic is full for the week you will be directed on when to call to book appointments for the following week.

To book a screening appointment, women over the age of 40 who have no breast problems and no breast implants may self-refer by calling:

A file will be made for you when you Call to book your screening mammogram appointment that includes your name, date of birth, mailing address and health card number. You do not need to have a doctor’s referral to make an appointment. However, please provide us with the name of your family doctor so that we can forward information regarding your mammogram results.

This service is available for all asymptomatic women over the age of 40 who have a current Canadian Health Card. Please have your health card ready when you call.

Any health care provider may refer a patient, or a patient or family member can refer themselves.

A physician or nurse practitioner's referral is required (sent by fax to 902-543-8895)  and you must be a patient with a history of:

• angina pectoris
• acute coronary syndrome (heart attacks or unstable angina)
• percutaneous coronary intervention (stenting)
• coronary bypass surgery, valve replacement or cardiac transplant
• peripheral arterial disease
• cerebrovascular accident (brain attack) or transient ischemic attacks (mini stroke)
• chronic heart failure and/or cardiomyopathy
• Or at least three major cardiovascular risk factors (based on the 2009 Canadian Cardiovascular Society Guidelines) (smoking, diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, family history of coronary artery disease in relatives under age 60).

How do I cancel/change my appointment?

Program Details

Cape Breton Heart Function Clinic

The Cape Breton Heart Function Clinic offers education, optimization of heart failure medication, and therapies for people who have suffered heart failure. Patients will see a nurse and a specialist which may include a registered dietitian.

The visit includes education, drug therapies and more.

A completed referral form and updated X-rays are required to process the referral. Primary health care providers will need to arrange to have X-rays completed within one year, with specific views as indicated on the referral form.

The Healing Garden at the Cape Breton Cancer Centre was built in 1999 and is located adjacent to the chemotherapy treatment room of the Cancer Centre. It is used as a public space for patients, visitors, and staff and is used by a therapeutic horticulture pilot program for activities. Therapeutic goals of the program include increasing hope, bringing a sense of control, restoring cognitive attention, and increasing a sense of empowerment. 

The Meloney Family Comfort Room is a place where cancer patients and their families can go for information, discussion or a quiet respite. Patients can come to the comfort room and use our complementary services such as Reiki, the Wig Bank and Look Good Feel Better. An appointment is required for these services.

The comfort room is located on the level three of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. To get to the comfort room, take elevator 7 which is located just outside of the cancer centre and it is on the right when you get off the elevator. 

Physiotherapists are primary care professionals which means you can complete an Outpatient Self Referral to go directly to a physiotherapist.

In some circumstances your physician may be required to complete an Outpatient Physiotherapy Referral on your behalf.

Program Information 
The Rapid Access  Transient ischemic attack (TIA) and Stroke Secondary Prevention Clinic provides rapid assessment by a Nurse Practitioner (NP) of patients who have experienced transient stroke-like symptoms who present to the emergency department or in the primary health care setting.

This clinic aims to rapidly identify patients who have experienced a TIA, and streamline patients with critical stenosis of the carotid arteries to surgical evaluation to reduce the risk of stroke. Patients will receive a neurologic examination by the Nurse Practitioner.

The TIA clinic will also  arrange diagnostic tests, if not already completed, such as carotid dopplers, CT scan of the head, ECG and holter monitoring and echocardiography if necessary to identify the underlying cause of their clinical presentation and treat any risk factors that could place the patient at risk of stroke.

SANE services are supportive, nonjudgmental and confidential. SANE care can be provided to you by doing one of the following:

• Go to any open emergency department. At those centres where SANE Program response is provided, the staff will call the SANE. At other locations, staff will coordinate care or provide information regarding nearest SANE response site.
• Call local police or RCMP
• Through your primary health care provider
• Call the SANE 24 hour response line for this area at 1-844-858-8036
