Rolf Pyde brings warmth to Colchester East Hants Health Centre front desk
Rolf Pyde touched down in Canada with a mission: Connect, contribute and make a difference. Last spring, he found his place at Nova Scotia Health’s Colchester East Hants Health Centre, where his warm smile and steady presence now greet patients and visitors every day he volunteers. “I really wanted to connect with people and contribute, especially as I was still building my professional network,” Rolf says, “Volunteering gave me a chance to learn about the healthcare system here, meet folks and use my skills to help others. It helped me feel part of the community and laid the groundwork for my career in Canada.”
As a front desk volunteer, Rolf serves as the first point of contact for patients, families and visitors - many of whom are elderly or feeling anxious about their hospital visit. His daily tasks include guiding patients to the right departments, offering information and directions and supporting those who need extra reassurance or a helping hand to navigate the busy halls. “Communication, empathy and patience are key,” Rolf says. “Sometimes people just need a bit of extra support and I’m proud to help create a welcoming atmosphere from the moment anyone walks in.”
Rolf credits the supportive staff and volunteer resources team for keeping him engaged and motivated. “Martin Fisher, our volunteer resources consultant, always checks in and helps whenever needed. The hospital employees are incredibly welcoming - they greet me warmly, chat and make me feel I belong. It’s rewarding to know that even small gestures can make someone’s experience positive,” he says.
Looking back on his time at Nova Scotia Health, Rolf recalls one particular moment with pride. On a busy morning, an elderly visitor became overwhelmed trying to find her way. Rolf not only directed her but walked alongside her to ensure she arrived at her appointment on time. “She thanked me for making her feel cared for. It’s moments like these that remind me how even small acts of kindness can make a big difference,” he says.
Rolf also shared an inspiring anecdote from a hectic day in the hospital lobby. “It was crowded and several people seemed lost or anxious. I helped guide them to the right departments, walked some to the elevators and answered their questions. Many thanked me afterwards and it made me proud to know I could bring calm to a busy environment and ensure everyone felt supported.”
Since June 2024, Rolf’s warmth, patience and dedication have made him an indispensable member of the volunteer team in the Northern Zone. Whether helping someone find their way or simply offering a reassuring smile, Rolf continues to make a difference - one caring interaction at a time.
