Note: This morning (March 11) Hants Community Hospital will be conducting a Code Silver exercise in its emergency department. This is a planned drill to help our staff prepare for emergency scenarios—there is no real threat. Patients and visitors may see actors in neon yellow vests with toy weapons and hear overhead announcements. The exercise is strictly controlled, and all participants will be clearly identified. If you are present and have questions or feel anxious, please speak with a staff member. Thank you for your understanding as we work to keep our hospital safe.
Celebrating our volunteers: The heart of the new North Cumberland Health Care Centre
As the doors of the new North Cumberland Health Care Centre in Pugwash opened, a wave of community spirit and dedication surged in with the first volunteers. These individuals, known for their involvement with the old hospital as friendly visitors and members of the Auxiliary, Foundation, and Community Health Board, have been pivotal during the initial weeks of operation. Their shared commitment and camaraderie have created a strong sense of community within the new centre.
Nova Scotia Health volunteers guide patients and visitors through the new electronic kiosk system. This essential task ensures everyone is directed to the appropriate waiting area, easing the transition into our modern facility. Their warm and helpful approach has significantly enhanced others' experience in finding their way through the health centre and addressing any questions they may have.
"It is amazing how community members have come out to support the new facility! The volunteers have been invaluable in helping the community adjust," says Jason Blanch, Volunteer Resources Consultant, Northern Zone, Cumberland County. "These people were already involved with the old hospital and have stepped up to support this fantastic new facility and their community."
The volunteer role of an information host is crucial. Hospitality ambassadors greet everyone entering the health centre, assist them with directions, ease apprehensions, and accompany them to their destinations within the facility. Their efforts help create a welcoming and efficient environment, ensuring visitors feel supported and informed. We are looking to expand our volunteer team across Cumberland County.
Nova Scotia Health volunteers are vital to our care, offering meaningful support to patients, clients, residents, families, and our frontline staff. Volunteering provides personal satisfaction, valuable experience, and a deeper understanding of the healthcare system.
