Spotlight: Lynn Muise, Practice Facilitator in Western Zone
After raising five boys as a stay-at-home mom, Lynn Muise decided it was time for a new challenge. “I went back to school in my 40s after my kids were grown and graduated with honours from the LPN program in 2016,” she says.
Since then, she has worked across Yarmouth and Shelburne hospitals in cardiac, surgical, and emergency departments, on the COVID unit, and in Mental Health and Addictions at the Recovery Support Centre. “Working on the COVID unit was a unique and challenging experience that really tested adaptability and teamwork. It showed me just how important flexibility and teamwork are in healthcare. It’s not always predictable, and you have to be ready to adapt quickly.”
Now based in Yarmouth, Lynn mainly supports the Yarmouth Primary Care Clinic, while also working with other sites across the Western Zone. She describes her role simply: “I help healthcare teams work smarter. That means making sure patients get seen faster and staff can spend more time on care instead of paperwork. I work on everything from streamlining workflows to optimizing electronic medical records, basically anything behind the scenes that helps the clinic run more efficiently.”
What drew her to this role is the chance to combine her love of helping people with her problem-solving skills. “Making things run more smoothly for patients and staff is incredibly rewarding,” she says. One project she’s especially proud of is being part of the rollout of a clear triage system at Yarmouth PCC. “It’s improved same-day and next-day appointments and made scheduling much easier for staff. Hearing the positive feedback from both patients and staff has made all the effort worthwhile.”
Lynn adds that people may not realize just how complex the role of a Practice Facilitator can be. “It’s not just scheduling and charts, it’s data analysis, workflow improvements, troubleshooting tech, and coordinating projects, all to make patient care smoother and more efficient.”
