As a Nigerian-trained pharmacist who is now practicing in Nova Scotia, Anthony Egboh can confidently say that Nova Scotia offers an incredible environment for internationally trained pharmacists to grow professionally and personally. A graduate of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, he relocated to Nova Scotia, Canada, where he currently works as an oncology pharmacist. Egboh’s primary reason for relocating to Canada was because he wanted to partake in the expanded scope Canadian pharmacist can have. When conducting his interview to learn more about his experience working with Nova Scotia Health, Egboh responded the following when asked, “why should other internationally trained pharmacists practice in Nova Scotia?”

Nova Scotia provides a clear and accessible pathway for international pharmacy graduates to obtain licensure. After completing the required steps with Pharmacists Gateway Canada, Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada and registering with the Nova Scotia College of Pharmacists, you’ll find the process to be well-structured and supportive. The requirements are transparent, and the resources available make it feasible to transition into the profession without unnecessary hurdles. It’s important to start early on your licensing.

Building connections is key to succeeding in Nova Scotia. Organizations like the Immigrant Services Association of Nova Scotia (ISANS) are invaluable because they provided me with essential resources and support when I first moved to Nova Scotia, helping me settle in and navigate the challenges of adjusting to a new environment. ISANS also facilitated networking opportunities within my profession, connecting me with mentors, colleagues, and job prospects that were instrumental in advancing my career. Attending local pharmacy events or conferences hosted by the Nova Scotia College of Pharmacists or the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists can also further expand your professional network and open doors to new opportunities. I was fortunate to have a pharmacist mentor who guided me through my licensing journey, offering invaluable advice and encouragement. Additionally, a kind-hearted Nova Scotian Good Samaritan played a crucial role in making my transition smoother and more comfortable.

2. Warm and Accepting Community

Nova Scotia is renowned for its friendly and welcoming residents. No matter where you’re from, people are open, accepting, and eager to help you feel at home. From my experience as a Nigerian graduate, I’ve found the community to be genuinely supportive, both professionally and personally. The province is also incredibly diverse. Engage with cultural communities to build your support network. This is particularly helpful when adjusting to a new environment. Whether you’re from Africa, India, the Philippines, or another part of the world, you’ll find cultural communities and organizations ready to welcome you. This sense of belonging makes settling here easier and allows you to celebrate your heritage while embracing diversity and Canadian culture.

3. Opportunities to Make an Impact

If you want to make a difference in your community, Nova Scotia is the perfect place to be. The expanded scope of pharmacy practice here is one of the most progressive in Canada, allowing pharmacists to:

• Prescribe medications for minor ailments.
• Administer injections.
• Lead pharmacy-led primary healthcare clinics, a recent initiative improving patient access to care.

Working in Nova Scotia Health as a hospital pharmacist has been especially fulfilling. I’ve had opportunities to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, contribute to oncology patient care, and directly impact patients’ lives through advanced clinical roles.
