A bright tradition lights up Aberdeen Hospital

For 37 years, the Christmas tree at Aberdeen Hospital has brought light and joy to patients, staff, and the New Glasgow community. This cherished tradition, made possible by Nova Scotia Power (NSP), is more than just a festive display—it’s a heartfelt gesture of gratitude from NSP to the hospital staff who work tirelessly throughout the year.

Each year, a local community member donates a tree, which NSP employees from the Stellarton Depot decorate with care. The tree, donated by a generous community member, stands proudly at the hospital’s front entrance, visible to patients, visitors, staff, and travelers along East River Road.

On Dec. 6, the annual tree lighting was made extra special by two-year-old Hailey Parker, who flipped the switch to illuminate the tree. Hailey, the daughter of Aberdeen Hospital employees Ryan and Chelsea Parker, has spent part of the past year in and out of the hospital due to ongoing respiratory issues. “We were so honored when Jennifer Sutherland, Aberdeen’s site lead, asked if Hailey would like to light the tree,” said Ryan Parker, Northern Zone manager of maintenance and operations. “It was a truly memorable moment for our family. In my role, I work closely with Nova Scotia Power each year to coordinate the tree’s arrival and setup. Seeing Hailey light the tree made it even more special.”

For the Parker family, the event brought a welcome reprieve. Hailey, who has been hospitalized five times since May, found joy in the brightly decorated trucks and the presents NSP employees brought her.

“The Nova Scotia Power team was incredible,” said Ryan. “They clearly loved being part of this tradition. It’s been a part of the community for decades and seeing it is heartwarming.”

“This is a labour of love,” said Dion Antle, operations manager for Nova Scotia Power’s Northeast Territory. “Our crew looks forward to decorating the tree every year. It’s a way to show our appreciation for the hospital staff and bring joy to the community. A big thank you to Hailey, our VIP, for helping us light up the season.”

For Hailey and her family, the experience was deeply meaningful. “The staff at Aberdeen have been incredible throughout Hailey’s care, treating her and even her baby doll with kindness,” said Chelsea Parker, manager of Nutrition & Food Services. “Seeing her light the tree felt like a full-circle moment.”

As the tree shines brightly this holiday season, it stands as a symbol of hope, community, and the power of collaboration to make the season bright for all.
