Love is just a whisker away: Pets bring joy to Harbourview Lodge residents

In the cozy corners of Harbourview Lodge in Sheet Harbour lives a trio of extraordinary cats who are the cherished companions of the home’s residents. These furry friends, each with their unique personalities, bring joy, comfort and a touch of magic to the lives of their human companions.
The arrival of each pet has its own story woven with threads of love, serendipity and purpose.
First, there's Missy Valentine, the social butterfly of the lodge. She loves to visit the residents, weaving her way through the hallways and stopping by each room to offer a friendly nuzzle or a playful paw.
Missy Valentine was the beloved companion of a resident who wanted to bring a piece of home along to Harbourview. While her owner has since passed away, Missy Valentine remains an important resident of the home. Her presence is a constant source of delight, and her affectionate nature has earned her a special place in the hearts of all who meet her.
Next, there’s Kimsee, adopted from a local shelter and chosen for her gentle and calm demeanor as a companion for a lonely resident. Staff immediately noticed the resident gained a new sense of purpose in caring for the kitty. When her owner passed away, Kimsee chose a new resident as her main companion, but she also explores the building when seeking pats or treats. When she is ready to return to her room for a nap, she sits at the door and softly meows. Kimsee is known and loved for her tiny voice and loud purr.
Tank, the newest addition to the lodge, is still finding his way. He stays near his owner for snuggles throughout the day but has started to explore the house area and is showing his personality more as each day passes. Tank is a charmer who captivates the residents and visitors with his big, beautiful eyes.
Harbourview Lodge's companion animal policy is deeply rooted in the Eden Alternative Philosophy of Care, an innovative approach designed to combat loneliness, boredom and helplessness that can negatively affect Elders in care facilities. By integrating animals into the daily lives of residents, the Elders experience companionship, purpose and laughter.
In addition to the resident felines, the lodge welcomes visiting animals (primarily dogs and goats, but all animals wanting to visit are considered on a case-by-case basis), brought in by family members and staff. These visits are a highlight for the residentsr who eagerly await the wagging tails and excited barks that fill the air. Residents often keep dog treats in their bedrooms in anticipation of their fur-friend visits.
Some dogs visit daily or weekly, pouncing from room to room with their owners, while others spend time relaxing in the home’s common areas during activities such as musical events, movie nights or socials.
Both resident and visiting pets bring an extra layer of happiness, enriching the lives of the residents and creating moments of pure joy. Their presence is a comforting reminder that love and laughter are always just a paw, a whisker, or a wag away.
