Fresh off her return to Canada in 2024 after living in the Middle East, Natasha AIAwashez jumped straight into community life. Determined to give back and meet the volunteer requirements for her bachelor of social work, she went searching for a place where her efforts could matter. She quickly zeroed in on Nova Scotia Health, drawn by its hands‑on roles and the chance to make a real, immediate impact. Most days, Natasha can be found at the main entrance of the hospital, serving in the “ambassador” role. Her shifts begin with warm greetings and smiles as she welcomes patients and visitors who may be unfamiliar with the hospital and unsure where to go. Natasha’s tasks range from guiding people to registration desks, accompanying them to their destinations and offering reassuring words to those who need them.

Throughout her shifts, Natasha is a steady presence. She sanitizes and prepares wheelchairs or sits with someone anxiously awaiting news. “Each day looks a little different but the constant is being present, attentive and ready to help,” Natasha says

Her motivation to volunteer is renewed with every shift. “There has not been a single day where I left feeling I hadn’t been helpful in some way,” she says. Each day brings new learning opportunities for her and she feels a sense of fulfillment that comes from making a difference.

When asked about achievements, Natasha says it’s a collection of small moments that stand out to her, such as offering a coloring book to a child or helping a patient problem-solve their way to the right department.  Natasha believes these acts help create a positive and supportive atmosphere for patients and families.

One experience Natasha recalls involved accompanying a visitor to the palliative care unit. Natasha walked with them, offering companionship as they faced a difficult visit. “What may feel like a simple few minutes to me can carry real weight for someone else,” she says

Through her volunteering with Nova Scotia Health, Natasha says she has discovered that making a difference is often about the little things.
