Two Nova Scotia Health volunteers say connecting with people and supporting their community motivates them to give their time.

Sybil McCurdy and Peter Topshee bring a unique perspective and passion to their roles. They were initially drawn to volunteering by a desire to connect with others and contribute to their communities.

Sybil saw it as an opportunity to greet and meet people. Her tasks involved answering visitor’s questions about directions to different departments and patient rooms. She finds motivation in meeting the public and takes pride in being able to help those coming into the hospital. “Helping at the hospital makes you feel good,” Sybil says, reflecting on the rewarding nature of her volunteer work.

Meanwhile, Peter was inspired to volunteer to give back and to get to know the community. His duties involve greeting and directing people to their appointments and ensuring they feel welcomed and supported. “I always feel better after a volunteer shift,” Peter says, emphasizing the positive impact volunteering has on his well-being.

Sybil and Peter highlight the importance of connection and service in their volunteer experiences. Their commitment continues to inspire those around them, making a meaningful difference for patients, visitors and staff.

Nova Scotia Health aims to ensure a volunteer’s journey is both meaningful and enjoyable. With a variety of roles and opportunities for learning, the goal is to create an environment where volunteers feel appreciated and motivated. Across the province, many hardworking volunteers help strengthen patient care.

Volunteer teams reflect a wide range of backgrounds, cultures, ages, abilities and life experiences. Some volunteers are exploring future careers in healthcare, while others offer valuable perspectives shaped by years of experience. No matter their background, all are united by a shared dedication to making a positive impact in the lives of others.
