Orthotics (braces)

We provide inpatient and outpatient orthotic services for people of all ages who require a device to protect, support or correct the position of a part of their body. Examples of orthoses include knee braces, ankle foot orthoses, and spinal braces.

Certified Orthotists CO(c) are trained healthcare professionals who evaluate and design orthotic (bracing) solutions for people with a wide range of health and mobility challenges. Your Orthotist will perform a detailed clinical assessment, and will work with you and the rest of your healthcare team to develop a treatment plan to meet your functional goals. Orthotics is part of the Assistive Technology department.

What can I expect at my appointment?

You will need multiple appointments for assessment, casting/measuring, fitting, and follow-up. During assessment, the Orthotist will ask you questions about your health, your lifestyle, and your goals. Measurements and a cast will usually be taken. You may be shown examples of the type of orthosis you require.

You will receive education about the proper use and care of your brace, how often you should wear it, and other information to help you get the most benefit from your orthosis.

You may also meet the Orthotics Technician, who works closely with the Orthotist to make the best orthosis for you. You may be asked to allow a student to work with your health care provider during the appointment.

What should I bring to my appointment?

Bring clothing that will allow easy access to the affected body part (e.g. shorts, or a tank top). If your leg is involved, bring the shoes you normally wear. If you currently have a brace, or have had one in the past that worked well for you, bring it with you.

To be assessed for a brace or to obtain a new orthosis, a written referral from a recognized health professional is required. Your insurance provider might require the referral to be from a physician. The original or a copy of the referral can be forwarded directly to our department.

If an existing device is in need of repair, clients can self-refer (no need for a written referral from a doctor). Please contact the department’s reception directly to arrange an appointment.
