Falls Prevention

If you live with frailty, you have a higher risk of falling. The good news is that there are many simple steps you can take to prevent falls and stay independent.

Tips to help prevent frailty and falls:

  • Keep moving! Regular activity helps build muscle strength, balance and coordination. If you’re unsure where to start, talk to a physiotherapist or exercise professional.
  • Take care of your health. Follow your healthcare team’s advice to manage any chronic conditions — this supports both your body and your mind.
  • Review your medications. Once a year, ask your family doctor, nurse practitioner or pharmacist to check your medications to ensure none increase your risk of falling.
  • Check your vision and hearing. Get tested every year and use glasses or hearing aids if needed.
  • Eat well and limit alcohol. Good nutrition and moderation help you stay steady.
  • Plan ahead. Keep your phone nearby and emergency numbers easy to read and close to every phone.
  • Use the right equipment. Devices like walkers or shower chairs can help you stay independent. Ask an occupational therapist or physiotherapist if you have questions.
  • Consider a medical alert system. If you live alone, or are at high risk for falls, a personal medical alert device with fall detection – or a smart watch with this feature – can automatically notify someone if you fall.

New Health Information System

Nova Scotia Health's new One Person One Record system has rolled out at facilities in the Halifax Regional and West Hants municipalities, and some provincial Mental Health and Addictions Program services.

During this time of transition to a better patient-record system, our teams will keep working to get you the care you need.

You may notice staff in purple vests helping our care teams use the new system.

We appreciate your patience and understanding.
