Administrative Professionals' Day featuring Nancy Hanrahan

Nancy Hanrahan stepped into unknown territory in 2007, embarking on a new career in an unfamiliar setting.
Throughout her 17 years at Cape Breton Regional Hospital as an administrative professional in the Mental Health and Addictions Program she never thought of going anywhere else.
“When I got here,” she says, “I really liked the people and I really liked the patients, so I just stayed.”
She has supported inpatient mental health as well as the central intake service. She’s currently an administrative assistant for associate physician services and supports the clinical virtual psychiatry consultation.
The best part of her job, Nancy says, is knowing she’s working in an area that makes a meaningful impact on the lives of so many.
“That’s why I do anything that is asked of me because I just love my job,” she says.
“It’s nice to see someone improve and get better. It’s nice to see the care they get from staff. Everyone is so dedicated and provides such high-quality and compassionate care.”
Being organized and structured is key to the success of an administrative professional, but Nancy says the desire to support others is also vital.
“You just have to be always out there for someone, wanting to help them out, and to make their job easier” she says, adding.” Anyone with those qualities should consider becoming an administrative professional, particularly in the mental health field because of how rewarding it can be.”
