Changes to improve safety, security at Valley Regional Hospital starts May 9
KENTVILLE, N.S. – Starting Saturday, May 9, a new artificial intelligence (AI)-powered weapons detection system will be used at Valley Regional Hospital (VRH) in Kentville. These measures are being introduced to enhance safety and security for all patients, visitors and hospital staff.
The technology will first be installed at the VRH emergency department entrance. This will be followed by the installation of another screening unit at the main hospital entrance at a later date, with other hospital sites getting the new system in the upcoming months.
Any item that is classified as a weapon, resembles a weapon or is reasonably deemed capable of being used as a weapon, will not be allowed inside. Security will be present to answer any questions or address concerns about navigating the new safety process. AI technology will not adversely affect people with medical devices.
How to prepare to visit emergency department:
• Allow extra time for your visit to account for the new screening process.
• Avoid bringing non-essential items, especially large bags or backpacks. This will minimize wait times and help everyone enter more quickly.
• Have your belongings ready to be checked and cooperate with staff to keep the process efficient and respectful.
• Prohibited items (i.e. firearms, brass knuckles) will be confiscated and may be turned over to police.
Nova Scotia Health is launching this system at hospital sites across the province to help create safer environments for patients, visitors and care teams.
