Construction to start on new Yarmouth Hospital Emergency Department: parking and patient drop-off changes

YARMOUTH, N.S.  After plenty of pre-work, construction on the new Yarmouth Regional Hospital emergency department is ready to begin. Weather permitting, actual construction work is expected to begin in the next week.

The new structure will be built in the area of the front hospital parking lot, in front of the School of Nursing, and will be connected to the current hospital building. This means no parking in this area once fencing and barricades go up around the construction site. Some things we want our patients and community to know:

  • No parking in front School of Nursing parking lot after the construction site is fenced off. (see photo 1)

  • Driveway to Building C (old hospital) entrance doors / drop-off loop will be closed for construction. Building C main floor door/entrance will remain open for pedestrian access via the Grove Road parking lot (cars will not be able to drop off patients at the main floor entrance).

  • Patients with appointments in Building C (old hospital) can be dropped off at rear, basement door, around back of the building. This area will be “15-minute patient drop-off parking only” (see photo 2). To get here, patients will use the driveway off Grove Road to back of the building.

  • Patient parking is available in the Grove Road parking lot and rear/south parking lot.

  • Front/north main hospital entrance will always remain open for patient drop-off.

  • Patients should plan to spend a little extra time finding a place to park – and leave plenty of time when coming to the hospital for appointments. Patients who are able to arrange to be dropped off for appointments are encouraged to do so.

The new parking lot recently created at the corner of Vancouver Street and Grove Road will be open by the time construction begins.

Everyone is asked to obey signs and respect fences, barriers and work crews. Drivers must park only in marked, designated parking spots. During construction there will be extra activity, heavy vehicles and construction crews in the area, so please use caution.

We are committed to patient-centred care, safety and access to our hospital. We look forward to sharing more updates as this project makes progress.
