Opening of South Shore Hospice celebrated at Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital

LUNENBURG, N.S. – A special event was held this afternoon at Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital to celebrate the South Shore Hospice becoming fully operational. The opening of all five hospice beds allows for enhanced access to compassionate, specialized end-of-life support close to home for patients and families. 

“Today is about celebrating having all five hospice beds finally operational and occupied, but more importantly it is about reaching a level of service to our community that helps ensure more people can spend their time at end-of-life surrounded by comfort, dignity and compassionate care, close to the people and places they know and love,” said Dr. Patricia Caldeira, Hospice Medical Director. 

The event was also an opportunity to recognize the community partners, donors, volunteers and healthcare providers whose shared commitment made this important milestone possible.

“I’m so pleased that all five hospice beds are now opened,” said Susan Corkum-Greek, MLA for Lunenburg. “I want to thank the community for their work and advocacy to ensure that our loved ones have the compassionate, private and dignified end-of-life care they deserve.”

The space has received generous support from the South Shore Hospice Palliative Care Society, the Health Services Foundation of the South Shore and the Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital Auxiliary which have made significant contributions to furnish the hospice rooms, transforming them into a comfortable, appropriate setting for patients and families.
