Self-testing kits allow all Nova Scotians to screen for HIV, test for chlamydia and gonorrhea

Nova Scotia Health is expanding the STI Care Now program to include free, self-testing kits for HIV screening in addition to chlamydia and gonorrhea testing. This initiative aims to improve access to testing and treatment, ensuring people can take proactive steps in managing their sexual health.

"STI Care Now represents a significant step forward in ensuring accessible, high-quality sexual health services for all,” says Dr. Todd Hatchette, medical director for STI Care Now. “By providing timely diagnosis, treatment, and education, we can reduce the transmission of STIs and empower individuals with the knowledge they need to choose the preventative strategies that are right for them to ensure they stay healthy.”

Nova Scotians can request a self-testing kit and HIV Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) assessment by completing the form available on YourHealthNS (under Services and Sexual and Reproductive Health) or on Nova Scotia Health’s web site.

Those who are eligible can have a kit mailed to the address they choose, along with a prepaid mailing label for easy return. Test results are shared by phone or email; those who require treatment will be assessed virtually by a member of the STI Care Now pharmacy team.

Nova Scotia Health is committed to enhancing sexual health services and ensuring that all Nova Scotians have access to the necessary resources for maintaining their health and well-being.
