A Year of growth, faith, community at Camp Hill

What began as a short-term trial to honour a single resident's request has blossomed into one of the most vibrant weekly gatherings in the Camp Hill Veterans' Memorial Building at QEII Health Sciences Centre in Halifax.

On Aug. 5, the community celebrated the one-year anniversary of its weekly bible study group, a thriving program consistently drawing up to 30 residents every week, with family members, staff and volunteers also in attendance.

Led by spiritual care staff Chaplain Tim Parker, with dedicated support from Recreation Therapy and Volunteers, evening sessions are intentionally scheduled so family members and other important relations are encouraged to join residents weekly.

While firmly rooted in the exploration of scripture, the gatherings emphasize universal themes of hope, purpose, compassion and the human experience rather than denominational differences. With the goal of shared discovery, this inclusive approach creates a welcoming space for individuals of all ages and backgrounds to ask questions, share perspectives, or simply listen and reflect.

Reflecting the vital role of lifelong learning in healthy aging, the program keeps minds active through historical context, lively discussions and biblical stories.

"I always leave having learned something I didn't know before." — resident

"I grew up going to catholic school but never knew more about the stories until now." — resident

"Father Tim explains things in a way that just makes sense." — resident

"I look forward to Wednesdays every week. It's good for my mind." — resident

The program’s success highlights a core tenet in spiritual care: by nurturing the internal, spiritual wellness of an individual, it fundamentally contributes to the exterior and overall health of the individual.

What started as a modest pilot has transformed into a cherished community tradition and it proves with the right space, connection and curiosity, growth and discovery truly have no age limit.
