A tracheostomy is surgery to make a small opening in the neck into the trachea. This opening (called a stoma) helps you to breathe. A tracheostomy tube is put into the stoma to keep it open. The tracheostomy tube lets air move directly into your trachea instead of through your nose or mouth. This pamphlet explains how to care for your tracheostomy at home.
