At the Spine Assessment Clinic, patients are first assessed by a physiotherapist who:
- Helps them understand and manage their condition
- Sends a referral to a surgeon, if needed
If surgery is recommended, patients are then followed by a nurse practitioner (NP) and a registered nurse (RN). Our spine nurse case managers guide patients through what to expect before surgery and follow up with them afterward to support their recovery.
How do I prepare for my first appointment with the physiotherapist?
Before your appointment:
- Keep taking your usual medications as prescribed
- Write down any questions you may have
- You can bring a support person, if you choose
- If you had a private MRI, please bring the disc to the Diagnostic Imaging Department 30 minutes before your appointment
What will happen at my appointment with the physiotherapist?
- Please arrive 15-30 minutes before your appointment
- The physiotherapist will talk with you about your:
- Medical history
- Current symptoms
- Past treatments
- Pain (what it feels like, and what makes it better or worse)
- The physiotherapist will complete a physical assessment
- They will also review any imaging you already have
After discussing your symptoms, doing an assessment, and reviewing your imaging (if available), the physiotherapist will decide the next steps. You will either:
- Be added to the list to see a spine surgeon
- Or the physiotherapist will work with you on a plan to help manage your pain, improve your movement, and support your overall physical health
Will there be any follow-up after my appointment with the physiotherapist?
The physiotherapist may need to review your assessment with a spine surgeon. After this, they will follow up with you or your primary care provider to let you know the plan.
If you are considered a potential surgical candidate, you will be added to the list to see a spine surgeon and may be sent for additional imaging (such as an X-ray or MRI).
If you are scheduled for surgery:
