Ainslie Murray, a Health Support Aide (HSA) with the Recreation Therapy program at Sutherland Harris Memorial Hospital’s Northumberland Veterans Unit, has been a true force of positivity and compassion.

In her summertime role as an HSA, Murray plays a role enhancing the lives of the veterans and long-term care residents who call the unit home. She collaborates with the recreation therapist to design and facilitate daily programs that bring joy and happiness to residents. From bingo and card games to walks outdoors, heartwarming conversations over tea or coffee, and delightful treats, Murray ensures that each resident finds a reason to smile every day.

When asked about her motivation, Murray said, “I love being able to build relationships with the residents,” she expresses with a warm smile. “Recreation is crucial to people’s physical and mental well-being! I want to help the residents enjoy where they live and have some fun while doing it!”

The impact of Murray’s work extends beyond the residents; she has forged meaningful connections with her fellow staff members as well. “In the HSA position, I have learned that so many pieces go into health care that the public just doesn’t realize; it’s been really eye-opening,” she shares. Murray currently attends StFX University, where she is in her final year in the bachelor of education program in elementary education.
