Changes to hospital screening at QEII’s Halifax Infirmary and Dartmouth General Hospital

AI security unit

New AI-based weapons screening will begin Saturday at the QEII’s Halifax Infirmary and at Dartmouth General Hospital. These measures are being introduced to enhance safety and security for all patients, visitors and hospital staff.

The technology will be in place at the main entrances and emergency entrances of both facilities. Any item classified as a weapon, resembles a weapon or is reasonably deemed capable of being used as a weapon, will not be allowed inside.

Security staff will be present to answer any questions or address concerns about navigating the new safety process. AI technology will not adversely affect people with medical devices.

At the QEII, visitors will no longer be permitted to enter the Halifax Infirmary via the pedway from the Abbie J Lane or Veterans Memorial buildings.

How to prepare:

  • Allow extra time for your visit to account for the new screening process. Arriving 10–15 minutes earlier than usual is recommended, particularly if you have an appointment.
  • Avoid bringing non-essential items, especially large bags or backpacks. This will minimize wait times and help everyone enter more quickly.
  • Have your belongings ready to be checked and co-operate with staff to keep the process efficient and respectful.
  • Prohibited items (i.e. firearms, brass knuckles) will be confiscated and may be turned over to police.

We appreciate your co-operation as we enhance safety and security for everyone.
