No two days are ever the same in a rewarding career in emergency nursing

Helping others has always been Sarah Curtis’ calling, from nannying to personal support work. Now, as a registered nurse in Valley Regional Hospital’s emergency department (ED) in Kentville, she’s living her passion every day. Emergency nursing is a dynamic, fast-paced career that brings new challenges, opportunities and growth every day. “Nursing offers so many opportunities, I knew I’d never be bored,” Sarah says.

After earning her nursing degree from St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Sarah gained valuable experience working outside of Nova Scotia. But the pull of home was strong.

When the chance came for her and her family to return to Nova Scotia, she jumped at it. It was at last year’s Nova Scotia Health Provincial career fair in Kentville when Sarah met Robin MacLean, the site’s emergency department manager. A few months later, she joined the team at Valley Regional Hospital.

“The emergency department is one of the best examples of teamwork in healthcare,” she says.

The unpredictable nature of the ED means every shift brings new challenges and experiences. Working in this fast-paced, ever-changing environment allows Sarah to develop and refine her clinical skills, all while making a significant impact on her community.

The most rewarding aspect of emergency nursing is the close-knit, supportive team she works with.

“You won’t find a better group of people to work with, develop your skills, and be supported through your career!” Sarah adds.

Looking to the future, Sarah is excited to continue refining her skills and seeing where her emergency nursing career takes her. She remains passionate about her role and the difference she can make in the lives of patients on their most challenging days.

Moving back to the East Coast has been an enriching experience and one that allows her to care for others while raising her family in the place she calls home.

With a wide range of nursing opportunities across Nova Scotia, there's a place for everyone to grow and thrive here. The province is actively seeking experienced specialty nurses to fill critical roles in our EDs, critical care units and operating rooms.
