The cyclotron is a federally regulated device that produces radioactive isotopes for the Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Centre. The cyclotron and the PET Centre are both located at the VG Site of the QEII Health Sciences Centre in Halifax.
The isotopes used in PET scans can help health care providers diagnose medical conditions, particularly cancer but also certain brain and heart disorders.
The objective of the Cyclotron – Radiation Safety Public Information and Disclosure Program is to:
- Meet federal requirements to ensure that radiation safety information relating to the health, safety and security of persons and the environment are communicated to the public.
- Determine the public views on cyclotron radiation safety.
- To gather feedback used to improve the existing program.
