STI and STD Clinic

The STI Clinic continues to provide confidential services by health care providers who specialize in assessing and managing STIs. However because of the need for physical distancing to prevent COVID 19 spread, a walk in option is no longer possible.  We now require you to make an appointment to be seen.

What to expect at your visit

Do I need to see a doctor?

We will continue to offer in-person physician assessment and treatment of STIs. However, if you only want screening and have no concerns that require you to see a physician we have developed a process where you can pick up pre-labeled collection kits and take your own samples.  These options can be discussed when booking your appointment.

Blood tests for STIs (such as HIV, hepatitis and syphilis) will require an appointment.

Testing:

How we test for STIs depends on your symptoms and sexual history. Some of the tests include:

  • urine (pee) tests (Do not pass urine for 2 hours before you are tested)
  • genital and rectal swabs
  • throat swabs
  • pelvic exams
  • blood tests

We have developed information sheets for self-collection of samples.  If you have a vagina and have discharge, the physician may recommend and pelvic examination similar to what would be done for routine PAP smears.

To check for herpes, the doctor will need to take a swab of the blister or open sore. There is currently no blood test in Nova Scotia to see if you have had herpes without an active outbreak.

To check for warts, the doctor will need to examine the area and can provide treatment at that time free of charge.

Treatment:

If any of your test are positive, we treat you in the clinic free of charge.

How do I get my test results?

You will get a card with your confidential ID number. No news is good news. You will be contacted and notified of any positive results within seven to 14 days. If you have any concerns you can call during the hours listed on the clinic card.
