A mammogram is an x-ray image of the breast. It is used to help detect and diagnose breast diseases. Mammograms are used on women and men who have symptoms of a breast problem, such as a lump. However, a routine screening mammogram is recommended for women beginning at the age of 40 with no symptoms.
The Nova Scotia Breast Screening Program operates a number of screening centres across the province with the largest being at the Halifax Shopping Centre. Other screening locations are are at most hospital sites within the province. It also operates a mobile screening mammography service which travels to 30 sites throughout the province.

How do I get an appointment?
Women or men that have symptoms of a breast problem should to go to the family doctor and get a referral.
Women over the age of 40 with no breast problems or implants may self-refer by calling the numbers below. Please have your health card number ready when you call.

Wait times
There are 2 separate wait time lists for mammograms with Nova Scotia Health/IWK. Diagnostic mammograms (when you already have symptoms & seek early detection) and and Screening mammograms (when you have no symptoms & seek early detection).
